Nonno and Nonnie; A Love Story

December 9, 2020

For what seemed like just a brief moment he shut his eyes.

He smelled her.

Rose water.

Then he felt her in his arms.

She was so soft and so fragile and he smelled her hair.

He opened his eyes and was overwhelmed; he was holding her.

He asked her if he was dreaming.

She asked if it was real this time.

They both whispered as if not to wake a sleeping giant.

The beeps of monitors gave way to a waltz.

One in which they both perfected decades ago.

Their destiny.

She looked so beautiful he thought.

She wore the dress he liked the best.

He hair done and make up perfect.

Like she spent hours on her appearance, but he knew it was all natural.

She always had been a natural beauty.

So tall and so handsome she thought.

His dark hair held a light curl, his skin so bronze kissed by the sun.

For some of us; devastation but for them their time had just begun.

For some life continued on, others carried the weight of the cross he didn't have to bear any longer.

A life time of ups and downs.

Good and bad.

Easy and hard.

All well earned.

A life time of dedicated work.

A life time dedicated to his family.

Some will rest easier knowing together their world has once again united.

True love blessed by the angels.

True love graced by God.

He held her so closely as he whispered to her, "I'm here now, you don't have to be afraid anymore. We will be together here. Dancing our dance, laughing and loving for eternity. It's our destiny."

She smiled and raised her eyes and there was a tear there.

He kissed it away.

"There's no pain here," he said to her. "No more tears."

She said, "No those are tears of joy. I've been waiting for you. And we've only been able to dance in our dreams. Today our dreams have come true."

She rested her head on his chest and listened to the beats of his perfect heart.

He held her in his arms and promised to never let go.

He kissed the top of her head and sighed.

He closed his eyes and knew that everything would be ok, he was finally home.

And the family that loved them both so dearly slowly found their way.

And every so often when the wind blows high over the bluff, you could hear the melody of their waltz and the sound of their laughter through the trees...
