Neglect to treat me different based on the presence of melanin
A poem concerning the riots and the underlying problem of not only police brutality but racism in the United States.
There's a reason why we scream
Black Lives Matter.
Some would like us to pretend,
ignore the splatter
of our children's brains
or the
Injustice provided
by the same political brains
Who are supposed to train the
new cowboys
running unchecked in the hood.
They're rocking new hoods -
No more white sheets
2 hide their identity
They're wearing it on a uniform.
Should be plain 4 u to see
When the agencies
That seem 2 be slaughtering,
Stringing us up on a tree
Are most often called *insert city here* PD
Some mighty, Strange Fruit I've seen
From Baltimore to Waller County Texas
Where Sandra Bland took her last breath
Check this
I find it hard 2 breathe
When we get put to death
Seemingly
With impunity
We've been criminalized,
Incarcerated.
Minimal access to proper education
Due in part to the fact
That Chicago's
Still segregated
Politicians simply
Regurgitating
Same ol' rhetoric
So Nauseating
Instead of help
Figuring out how to redistribute the wealth
They offer us a good helping
Of villanization on the news
Make people who don't know us
Hate us too
We can't all be Olivia Pope
But there's no hope for change
When they make us all thugs
Call us names
Even claim that we're worthless
Most of the country
Built on our backs
Damn -
We sure serve a purpose.
Actually,
as time goes on
You'll see
we're a sea of humanity.
Do me a favor,
Don't tell me you don't see color.
Just say you see it,
Acknowledge it
and put some respeck
on that thang.
Just neglect
to treat me different
based on the presence
Of melanin
I'm telling 'em -
I'm telling the people
We are all created
Equal
So don't make eradicating prejudice
The long awaited sequel
to King's dream
Stay woke.
Stay present.
In the face of new hatred,
make your voice heard,
Scream.
