My Oldest Son

My pride and joy

No matter how tough life ever become over the years,

I only had to remember how it is that I’m truly blessed,

Thirty years ago, one traumatic but heartbreakingly beautiful day,

My heart was forever stolen, I do have to confess.

***

A tiny newborn boy, born way too early,

A little broken being, was he going to survive,

I wasn’t ready to become a mum, I thought I had plenty of time,

There were still weeks before he was due to arrive.

***

My heart broke that day, to see this tiny sick little being,

Horrified to think I’d lose him so soon,

But he showed us his strength and his sheer stubbornness,

His insistence that where trouble was concerned, he was immune.

***

From there he went from strength to strength,

Taking on the world and always coming out on top,

Once his mind is made up, there’s no point in fighting,

He’ll succeed where most give up and decide to stop.

***

There’s not a day that I don’t look at him with pride,

Knowing he is the very best parts of me,

His resilience, his loyalty, his love, his strength,

All there for the entire world to see.

***

From the time he knew the meaning of it all,

He was determined to step up and be the man of the house,

So there we were, the three of us and he took on the role with pride,

Try hurting me or his little brother and it’s his ire you’d rouse.

***

I remember well the fights the two of us would have,

When he decided it needed to be a certain way,

I was careful not to break that wonderful spirit of his,

So I’d listen and let him have his say.

***

Sometimes though, he really was too clever for his own good,

And he’d really put me to the test,

But I’ve never backed down from a challenge either,

And it was how I taught him his lessons best.

***

Now here he is, thirty years of age,

With his own family, willingly taking on his own responsibilities,

I couldn’t be more proud of the man he has become,

And yet I can still see all his future possibilities.

***

I know how blessed I am, how truly lucky I have been,

And my proudest ability, is the role of Ramon’s Mum,

It’s where I’ve done my best work, where I’ve succeeded the most,

And my greatest pride in this world, is to call Ramon my Son.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
