Monument at Sunset

My last evening in Germany

By Ahna LewisPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read
Walking up the hill on my way to the monument

Soft blue melts into a blush of orange

Purple gray clouds frame the silhouette of land

The treetops still earthy green, but fading

Sloping downwards at the Painter’s command

I sit in the grass and earth of hillside

Remembering past dreams and past friends

~

When the blaze of sun dips down slowly

The rays still cast against wildfire sky

I wonder if this is a sunset forever

The final parting between you and I

~

The church bells echo through the valley

Tolling memory, loss, and life

The gentle breeze, the chirping crickets

The stillness after evensong

The sun is gone, but the light remains

the burning gold, a reflection of dawn

The hill behind the monument

Author's Note: After five years of living in Germany, I wrote this poem on my last evening in my beautiful Black Forest village. I loved living there, and I still miss it every day.

  • A treasure of the home you found for yourself there. A memory to carry with you always, even as you make a home for yourself elsewhere. Beautiful.

Beautiful! Iceland is number one on my list of places I must go someday, but Germany is a close second. I especially want to visit the Black Forest! And see some castles and drink some Riesling. It so great that you were able to encapsulate your memories through poetry your last night there.
