Monument at Sunset
My last evening in Germany

Soft blue melts into a blush of orange
Purple gray clouds frame the silhouette of land
The treetops still earthy green, but fading
Sloping downwards at the Painter’s command
I sit in the grass and earth of hillside
Remembering past dreams and past friends
~
When the blaze of sun dips down slowly
The rays still cast against wildfire sky
I wonder if this is a sunset forever
The final parting between you and I
~
The church bells echo through the valley
Tolling memory, loss, and life
The gentle breeze, the chirping crickets
The stillness after evensong
The sun is gone, but the light remains
the burning gold, a reflection of dawn

Author's Note: After five years of living in Germany, I wrote this poem on my last evening in my beautiful Black Forest village. I loved living there, and I still miss it every day.

Stunning! Thank you for taking us on such a sublime journey and sharing such a beautiful place with us 🤗
A treasure of the home you found for yourself there. A memory to carry with you always, even as you make a home for yourself elsewhere. Beautiful.
Beautiful. Felt like I was there. It’s funny how some places just stay in your heart for all time.
You painted this picture so well. Absolutely beautiful Ahna!
Beautiful poem.. you can clearly see the love you had for the place, and your grief for the thought of leaving it forever 😊
Maybe one day I’ll be able to experience as well. 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾
This sounds like a beautiful place. Thank you for taking me there for a moment with your lovely poem 💖
The only thing more beautiful than your photos were your words. It was like a song! I loved it so much!
I felt your loss in this, Ahna! Beautiful memories!
Beautiful! Iceland is number one on my list of places I must go someday, but Germany is a close second. I especially want to visit the Black Forest! And see some castles and drink some Riesling. It so great that you were able to encapsulate your memories through poetry your last night there.
This place sounds sooo peaceful and beautiful. I loved the poem - and also the fact that this remains vivid in your memory. Stunning!
Such a beautiful poem to describe such a beautiful place! Those photos are stunning ❤️❤️❤️
Baden-Wurttemberg is so beautiful! You catch its essence wistfully and with longing in this poem Ahna! Lovely and elegiac. 💔
