Monsters Made Of Sand

Yoshitaka Amano for Neil Gaiman's 'The Sandman: The Dream Hunters'

In this bed that I have made

I turn, as in a grave

Reaching branches outward

Craving air but not so brave

As to risk the dangers of the

Untold Deep beneath

Secret truths sleep dormant

Over mysteries they keep

Creatures of lost legend

Nesting eggs that glimmer gold

Willing to break open

And outstretch their wings of old

In this bed that I have made

My roots recoil in fear

Pull myself back inward

Seeking memories held dear

Ill-begotten comforts

Cohorts to my inner voice

Echoing off empty walls

While sweet demons rejoice

I can hear them dancing

In the space beneath the floor

Beckoning me further

Into madness, nevermore.

We must be careful of the beds we make, they can come back to haunt us. Be careful of the monsters under the bed.
