She hesitated before writing her next question, aware that this might cost her yet another piece of herself. "Is there a way to stop the memory loss?" she wrote.

The response came slowly, the symbols forming with deliberate care: "The cost of knowledge is great. The mind must sacrifice to transcend its boundaries."

Tanya felt a dart of despair. The Rokunians' answer offered no comfort, only a confirmation of her fears. She sat back, staring at the tablet, weighing her options.

She could stop now, preserve what was left of her memory, or she could continue, delve deeper, at the risk of losing herself entirely.
