Little Smiles

The warmth and innocence that stretches on for a mile,

the laughter unsullied by our world's darkness.

Nothing is more comforting than a child's smile,

as the world tears itself apart because of subtle differences.

Children bring with them something lost but not forgotten,

memories of a time before things got so dammed hard.

Remembering long ago, before the world turned so rotten,

just sitting and watching them play in their yard.

Resistance should be futile

because you're going to give in.

How can you refuse that warm and unwavering smile?

Before you know it, the playing will begin.

Something so simple begins to change your whole day,

and you forget you are tired as you start to play.

Their questions and wonderment abound,

and before long, all you hear is that giggling sound.

You hope they all remain sweet and vaded,

because you want the best for them, they need to be led.

Hoping against all hope, they never become sour and jaded,

staying the course from each dawn until their little heads are in bed.

Children are warm and genuine to all that love them,

their love, unconditionally given without thought of why.

Their warmth is a comfort that is unknowingly given,

received by all those that are willing, under the same blue sky.

With reckless abandon and wild-eyed excitement, they'll run on til they're done.

All it takes to experience being one again is the willingness to forget your day and have a little fun.

After years as a dad, being a grandpa brings me comfort.
