‘Life becomes easier when you learn to accept an apology you never got.’ --Robert Brault
Since my involvement in weekly writing challenges, I am beginning to enjoy structured poetry. I also may be growing tired of doing things my way and being right. Whatever the case may be, this is the second poem that I have written in the form of a villanelle. This poem was inspired by a Robert Brault quote, ‘Life becomes easier when you learn to accept an apology you never got.’ Like the African proverb, ‘He who forgives, ends the quarrel,’ it is a true statement that I (at times) have difficulty mastering. In an effort to break out of this “rebellious poetic freestyle” mode, I wanted to challenge myself to write poems with structure. The African Proverb, is a little better than this one.

Letting go of bitterness,
life becomes easier
when you learn to accept an apology
you’ve never got. Freer,
than an ex-con, water skier.
You are more daring than you’ll ever be.
Life becomes easier
than making ice cubes in your freezer.
There is no fine print, hidden agendas or ideologies.
You’ve never got freer.
They might mistake you for a tree lover or Christ believer.
No need for a degree in divinity or theology.
Life becomes easier
than a standardized testing brain teaser
or an A+ on a final exam in biology
you’ve never got. Freer,
than you’ve ever felt in your entire career.
You faced conflict with another, confidently.
Life becomes easier.
You never got freer.
