infernal wings

maiden flight of the phoenix

when i leave his heart behind

there will be ashes where i stood

embers glow, still amber

like the fiery mood

quiet scars still burning in the dark

the fading warmth escapes its cage

revived by a persistent, lonely spark

fed by heated words, a sudden turn

a pyre rises higher with the wind

a wilder thing than it ever was

before this sovereign rebirth

erasure where the embers danced

the scorch left before they slept

jagged crest of yellow heat

that breaks the promise silence kept

unbound, unhinged, an open jaw

that owns no master, upholds no law

nested in the kindling blaze

a solitary phoenix hatches

from soot and smoke and shells of egg

launching for one maiden flight

razed with each flapping flash

what infernal wings leave behind
