With each year that goes by, I dedicate this day to honoring your memory
with dessert before dinner, chocolate milkshakes or vanilla ice cream cones,
a bottle of the raspberry water you kept stocked in the cellar,
and I write. I try to remember the time before we lost you, before you lost yourself,
before each visit was a guessing game of when and where your brain would be
before the beginning of the end, when you were still fully you.

Sorry for your loss. Your grandad sounds like such an awesome person - anyone who chooses dessert before dinner is :)
