I Dreamt a Soul's Dream

While distance kept us apart, our souls paid no attention to such mundane things as mortal limitations, so often they would find each other as we slept. Of course, we got to come along as well, as spectators in our dreams, as I am sure you already know.

What’s that? Oh, you didn’t know? Well, you see, our soul will occasionally wander while we sleep, and we get to see everything they see while we dream. These are the dreams that seem so real, so wonderful, that upon awakening our first feeling is one of disappointment because we realize it was, after all, just a dream.

But I digress, where was I? Oh, yes, so on one particular occasion, when my soul went to find hers, he found her soul asleep, dreaming a dream as only a soul can dream. Which is a rather rare occasion, indeed. Therefore, my soul could not help but watch, and neither could I.

I was delighted to find her as a fairy, though if anyone were to just happen by, they would see what appeared to be an ordinary dragonfly, or as much so as a dragonfly could ever be deemed ordinary. I watched in fascination as she went from flower to flower, carefree, her blurred incandescent wings a flutter, as she sampled the nectar that each flower had to offer. Never had I felt such a feeling of joy and contentment, nevertheless secondhand, as it were. It was then that I realized, with quite a bit of sadness, that the flowers and nectar were life, its rewards, and everything else it had to offer.

This is what her soul longed for.

I could only hope that one day she would find the courage to follow her soul. So she could find her happiness, and so that I could follow her.
