I Am a Fearless Optimist
I do not fear change.
One of the first things taught
In your average common core
High school English class
Is the difference between
Static and dynamic characters
A dynamic character is
Someone who changes in some way
Throughout the story
And a static character
Stays the exact same
I have never understood this
Never in my life
Have I ever met someone
Who could confidently say
"I am the exact same person
I was a year ago"
I know some people
Who can't even say
That they're the same person
They were a month ago
Myself included
A tree does not bloom
In the same fashion
As the previous year
You will never step
In the same river twice
Technology will continue to advance
Dead matter will become one with the earth
Trends will go in and out of style
Politicians will acquire a new face to win
And human beings will change
It may be for the good or for the bad
But one way or another
It is going to happen
People are going to change
Until the end of time
I consider myself an optimist
I always am on the hunt
For that silver lining
I live in a world full of
Being unapologetically naive
I know that people make mistakes
We are not built by Skynet
We are capable of taking a failure
Figuring out what went wrong
And changing
Forgive me for believing
That this is true of a boy
Who picked me up from my lowest low
Brought me to my highest high
And lost his grip
I cannot allow myself
Of all people
The right to learn from my mistakes
If I can't be bothered
To allow others to do the same
They say that this love is blind
That looking past what will probably happen
In hope that something amazing might
Just makes me a love sick fool
Well I don't buy that
I will never apologize for being
Dangerously passionate about the what ifs
I will never apologize for
Dismissing the dark shadows of impending broken-heartedness
In hopes of the happiness that will come if I'm right
I am a fearless optimist
I know that life is a pessimist's world
Built by fear of rejection and heartache
Held together by fragile glass walls
Waiting to shatter at the first sign of strife
This is not what my world is like
My world is built by the miracles that happen
When you give a broken soul a chance
The grass is only greener on the other side
If you leap the river and water it
Even if you went through all the trouble
To cross the roaring river
Just to watch the grass turn brown
At least you cared enough to take the risk
And I'm sure the change of view is breathtaking
So go ahead
Tell me the grass is doomed
I will still land on two feet
A smile on my face
And a watering can in my hand
I am a fearless optimist
I am a believer in true love
In all of its cliché glory
I am a believer in happiness
I am a believer in change
