One - evil, one - good

But, two sides of the same coin

Henry and Edward

*

Thanks for reading!

This is another entry into the BookReviewHaiku thing that Judey Kalchik started.

I very deliberately placed Henry (Jekyll's first name) below the evil side and Edward (Hyde's first name) below the good side, because although many people believe it to be that Jekyll turns into this evil creature-like-man Hyde and is a good person. He's not really. He just covers over his violent and sexual urges and doesn't want to face consequences for stuff he does.

It's ever-so-slightly similar to Walter White in Breaking Bad - originally written to seem like a desperate man who wanted to doing good for his family. But, that's not really the case. He became the bad guy...the big shot...he always wanted to be. He was that person, underneath everything. The cancer he got just gave him the excuse and push he needed.

So there you go.

I love Jekyll and Hyde! Your Author's Note was very thought provoking. I shall ponder on it! Awesome Haiku-review 🍩🥐

  • Nicely done, except that your first line has seven syllables. "One - evil, the other - good" "One - bad, other - good" would work.

Deep, very deep. This happens to be one of my favorite tales. 👏

Yes! That’s one of my favorite classic novels, and I love your analysis of it. It’s representative of the shadow self every person has, which I think comes out when people drink. Because alcohol lowers inhibitions. Some people are just more bubbly when they drink. Others get violent… because that’s who they are deep down, and what they want to do when sober. Like you said, he doesn’t have a “good” side with compassion. He has a side that behaves for purely logical reasons, and a side that doesn’t.

Confession: I still haven't watched Breaking Bad. *Whew!* I feel much better now. This is a great entry and your positioning is aptly justified. Well done, my friend!

Really great work! both in your rendering and the chosen book. Hits perfectly that off-center symmetry classic to haiku.
