He May Have Won the Battle

But was not totally unscathed

He wanders the valleys of the lost souls,

Within his hand he holds a tonic of wisdom and sanity,

Smalls sips withdraw his breath from the breeze,

The elixir the only thing that distinguishes him from the rest of humanity.

**

He runs with the wolves as leader of their pack,

Wearing the sinew of coyote hearts laced into his boots,

Fear wafts from his essence as he passes you by,

Because you understand it’s your enemy in which he cahoots.

**

A loud bang flashes off on top of the hill,

He slowly turns to set his gaze upon the confusion,

A fire burns brightly where once a house stood,

Destruction the only given illusion.

**

He strolls the trail that’ll take him to the devastation,

Upon his shoulder rides the eagle that honours his courage,

They are inseparable as eyes that see all,

Gazing through the fire, burning through long forgotten storage.

**

As he stands and ponders the effect of this destruction,

A long snake slithers from within the flames,

His eagle swoops, grasping it with its talons,

Vicious beak effectively putting an end to its games.

**

He watches his eagle destroy the legless lizard,

Then searches the vicinity for its master of disguise,

Off in the distance a flicker of a black horse’s mane swims,

And perched upon its shoulders is his nemesis, in which he despise.

**

He takes off at a run, his wolf pack on his heels,

And they soon take down the stallion who didn’t stand a chance,

The battle rages between the two enemies as swords bleed and clash,

And the spirit animals watch on, as the two twist and dance.

**

He comes out the winner, his nemesis now dead,

But he didn’t win the battle totally unscathed,

He bleeds the wounds of the tormented; raw and rabid,

Weary from the battle, and the craziness in which he has bathed.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

No one survives a battle unscathed, even if the other should never land a blow, for the mind & heart shall indeed be changed forever.

  • So glad he won the battle! Loved your poem my friend!
