He Looks Into Her Eyes
A young unblemished child
A Villanelle To Those Who Care
He looks into her eyes
And sees her frightened soul
A young unblemished child
She stares into the skies
The window bare and cold
He looks into her eyes
While others run and hide
This is her place of hope
A young unblemished child
He does not turn aside
Her suffering he knows
He looks into her eyes
And asks the question why
We maim and torture so
A young unblemished child
How fierce the battle cries
Her teddy bear she holds
He looks into her eyes
A young unblemished child

Do we dare to stop and look as he does?
Would we rather focus on the “positive” and ignore the real?
Is it positive to turn your face from suffering?
When do our souls listen?
Can joy still live in suffering?
Is there joy to be found anywhere, if not in truly engaging in the lives of others?
