Have You Ever Seen Such Blue Water?

A poem for the island of Bonaire.

By Maura Fisher-BernsteinPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

Suddenly, I’m here,

The myriad hues of azure welcoming me,

Bon bini, mi dushi, [ Welcome, my darling]

Brilliant waves of cerulean and cyan that stretches to cobalt and navy,

A vast ocean of blueness that feels sacred.

Amongst the white caps and through the chasmic depths,

Denizens of the deep dwell,

In holes made by Neptune himself,

On reefs in desperate need of sanctuary,

Ta subiendo, amor. [I am here, love]

I delve deep when I can,

And am always stunned by the beauty of these skerries,

So much so that I have to catch my breath before descending,

To take it all in before I can observe it from afar, respectfully,

Salba nos recip di koral. [Save our coral reefs]

The music on the island are languages,

And reggae nights by the town pier,

It’s the people and the culture that was here before,

That survives now despite the pressures of colonialism,

Deseá ku ta bai. [I want Him to leave]

I know I am fortunate beyond measure to enjoy such majesty,

And I do what I can to preserve it, both in my mind and in its physical entirety,

For the places in the world that are so magical, so extraordinary,

Deserve to be preserved, to flourish,

Sin intervenshon. [Without intervention]
