A day for the basics helps for a lifetime.

In quarantine, I learned how to play
tennis from my brother’s friend.
She picked me up, and spent most of the day
just showing me where to put my hands.
When my first tennis match was
played, I hoped she would come watch
with the rest of my family, as
they tried to cheer me on.
I won my match, and made my serves-
but all I thought about were my hands,
because my first match was full of nerves,
and if they shook, I had no chance.
A full year later, and I’m still glad
she showed me where to put my hands.
