goodnight and goodbye
a poem.
there will never be
another “goodnight”
an evening’s end
you’re at your place,
I’m at mine
//
not another “good morning”
wordlessly whispered through
slow kisses and
smiling eyes
when you were the first sight
mine beheld in a
sun-splashed room
even though we’d
drawn the curtains closed
//
you’ll never know, but
as you held me that night
so far from sleep,
I drifted off to another place;
where my mind wanders when
internally, I begin to feel
those three words that
any hopeless romantic
is always dying to hear
//
but the three you gave me,
last we spoke
at first, I’d nearly laughed
please, can you tell me
that wasn’t a joke?
yeah alright sure
not even hello
when I’d grown weak and
relapsed —
asked to see you again
yeah alright sure
as if we hadn’t even been friends
let alone, the first boy to
have slept in my bed
//
the gut punch I felt,
when after a week
no other words followed —
not another peep…
//
so I’m left with no choice —
this unrequited love can’t go on
goodnight and goodbye
consider my love for you gone
