Erasers

We wrote our minds

Turned pages and created

A story all our own,

With characters flitting

In and out,

Changing with the season,

Riding falling leaves

And melting with the snow,

We allowed ourselves

The chance to grow

To nest,

To build a scene

That created reliability

Or fickleness,

We were given the pencil,

The ability to write dark,

Push hard into the paper

And create our stand,

Or erase and start anew

With fresh ideas

And newer thoughts,

We learned to sharpen that pencil-

Most of us-

But some of us broke it

Snapped it in half

And held only the eraser,

Handing the lead to someone else

And watching as they changed our story

Not knowing that we

Had the ability

To erase the tale they told

To scrub it out

And create something new

From the eraser stub,

To scratch and claw

A new story into the paper

With the metal left behind,

To create a story so stubborn

It could never be erased.
