Drowning in Sunlight

On Moderation and Longing

By Savannah Martinez-UhlerPublished about a year ago 1 min read

She grew up in the dark

Using the moon for guidance

It became her home; its glow

The only light in her small world

So distant and haunting

Yet never constant

Always waxing and waning

Casting her into darkness

She longed for its caress

Bending herself to find it

Grasping at every ray she felt

Until she caught the sun

It flooded her surroundings

Banishing the darkness

She drank it up until she was full

It was enough, and then it was more

There was still an ocean of it

And she was caught in its throws

Its waves forced her down

Burning her eyes and throat

It demanded to be consumed

Its attention was oppressive

But this was not her light

What started warm began to burn

Its heat began to suffocate her

She screamed for the moon

But she couldn’t see

She begged it to find her

But the sun held on

She belonged to it now

It swallowed her whole
