Desert Rats

You Can Take The Rat Out Of The Desert, But You Can't Take The Desert Out Of The Rat.

Calloused vessels

from the lack of water

Seared from the heat

Polished from the sand

:

Empowered by the thunderstorms

Electrified by the lightning

Enthralled by the winter's snow

:

Desert people are forged from the extremes

Like the ancient Joshua Tree

we are unique survivors

A rare marvel

not found in any other place

:

Even when we wander far from our deserts

Rolling into a new town

like a lost tumbleweed

We find the other desert dwellers on our journeys

outside the walls of desert valleys

:

There’s something distinct

about the desert dweller

:

The savagery

The resilience

The oddity

The unconventionality

:

There’s something even more distinct

about the wandering desert dweller

:

A mixture of delicacy

and ferocity

that reflects our experiences

:

The softness of our hearts

beyond our spines

The water in our souls

beyond our scales

:

The flowers we've grown

upon our cactus faces

and the miles we've traveled

beyond our taproots

:

A wandering desert dweller

can instantly sense

who is from the desert

who left the desert

and who was birthed beyond the desert

:

It’s an extraperceptory sense

embedded in us

like the sand grains

that were imbedded in our skin

when the sand storms swirled around us

:

And just like the dust devils

lifted us off our feet away from where we stood

as desert wanderers

we lifted ourselves from where we stood

in the womb of the desert land

:

Changing winds carved our stone

into amphitheaters of arches

Where the air's symphony sings

songs of the wandering spirit

:

Rebirthed into fertile soils

our seeds expand

The desert rose blossoms

in the desert wanderer

Forever carved by the sands
