Deja Vu

Over the decades

The excitement of young love,

A heart taken unexpectedly, a dream,

Shocked by the giddiness, the rapid heart beat,

The heat of ecstasy filtering through the bloodstream.

**

Destined, a love that was meant to be,

The meeting of the eyes, the cautious smile,

Soon turned to a flattering grin,

It looks like love was back in style.

**

The late night phone calls,

The silken voice whispering in an ear,

The promises of forever,

While the nervous butterflies flutter inside in fear.

**

The joining of two bodies,

The gift of touch, a sensual kiss and erotic pleasure,

To feel once again, the opening of two hearts,

To explore at depth and in leisure.

**

Until the end,

The devastating finale of a broken heart,

The ache of loss, the power of grief,

Wondering at the cruelty of two hearts apart.

**

Life moves on,

The pain buried deep inside,

The heart irreparably shattered,

And the love torn asunder until it eventually died.

**

Two beings wandered the darkened pathway of loss,

Trying to stem the tide of loneliness with strangers,

Riding the waves of regret, never staying for long,

Instead, burying the love — one’s sanity forever in danger.

**

Decades pass but the memories survive,

Until fate takes a path as a chance meeting,

Two long lost lovers reunited,

And a deep love affair once more repeating.

**

But alas, time has not been kind,

Two beings that have outgrown their youth,

Attempting to rekindle the magic,

Until they eventually face the truth.

**

The young love buried within the memories,

Never survived those devastating lost years,

Change and growth had paved each pathway,

Ensuring there was nothing left but the tears.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

    Wistful, heartbreaking, hopeful, & tragic.

  • This was so sad. I thought they would be happily reunited. But yes, life doesn't always give us what we want. A very poignant poem!
