Dear Me
I am a writer
Dear Me,
there you go again,
with midnight twinkling in our bloodshot eyes
the blank screen waits patiently
fingers tickle the keyboard with subtle pries
suddenly a spark ignites,
possibilities grow like sunflowers
tall and beautiful in the daylight
Imagination is born, birthed from an idea
And just like that, in that moment, the blinding light illuminates the darkness
and we ponder, and wonder, and think the dangerous words of
What if?
you close our eyes and we can see them
we can hear them
the characters that beg to be written
if only a moment, if only a chance
they want to have their dance
A salsa, a tango, a waltz
we can hear the music playing
As our tale unfolds,
it begins without an ending
just like life itself,
the flames of the story flicker on the page
the magic, the mayhem, the pleasure, the pain
everything is a choice -
if the ballerina pirouettes under the mandevilla
whether the chef keeps screaming ‘add vanilla’
what about the guilty magician full of strife
or maybe the devil beats his wife?
the con is still on
perhaps insert a lovely black swan
the murdered body is missing
don’t forget to add the bit about the neighbors kissing
the forgotten sailor floating in the ship’s wake
or dreadfully describe the orphan’s greatest mistake
the prison escapees lost at sea
or maybe a lottery winner only buys misery
a lonely astronaut navigating the Milky Way
how about an apothecary from Bombay?
the trophy wife with a grudge
or an anorexic teen girl that only eats fudge
a day drunk chain smoker
who doubled down one night at poker…
You seem to forget
You aren’t done yet
there’s ink in our veins,
and we will bleed the pain
because the story is mine, the choice is ours -
if he’s a lover or a fighter
the nuance is my decision
because I am the writer.

Such a great poem! It captured the process of creating a story very nicely. I sometimes get so many ideas at the same time and then struggle to jell them together.. usually that's what times time at the beginning of the story. can be quite annoying 😅
