Dear Groundhogs...

For Pete and Willy on Their Special Day

Dazed and Refused

Note: some of you do not celebrate Groundhog Day (every February 2nd). You might be familiar with Candlemas Day (European inspiration for the event). If the groundhog in question sees its shadow on a sunny day, six more weeks of winter; if not, an early spring. And our rodents - starting with Willy and Pete (there are others) - have different prognostications above and below our borders. Nice.

So, enjoy...

Dear Willy and Pete,

I envy the feat

of choosing the weather's sway.

*

You are rodents

who have spent

time and energy on your special day.

*

And you don't agree:

It's like 'pick me

I'll bring you an early spring.'

*

That was Willy.

Pete said, 'That's silly;

cold is more of my thing.'

*

I am just glad

January's done, and I add

that spring is almost here.

*

Thank you for this.

You've confirmed what we miss:

Even with rodents, we can't agree.

*

Indeed...

Thank you for reading!
