Deadbeat

Spoken Word

By Renee McGowenPublished 6 years ago 1 min read

You always hear things like "Daddy's little girl"

To be his girl, I'd guess you'd need a daddy in the equation.

Like 2+2x3+6/1=18

I spent 18 years praying for this love.

At home is no different.

The fights and broken promises.

Like 1+2+3/2=3

Age 3 was the last time I heard "good job honey; I'm proud of you."

I'll be strong, stronger than the highest category hurricane.

I've grown up faster than any flower can sprout.

I'll live more years than you can count.

Without you.

Because I was never his "little girl" or her "little helper"

I've learned my ABCs

Counted my 1, 2, 3s

I've lived a grand life and there was no you and I.

I survived.
