Dangerous Safety

A Cautionary Sonnet

An AI Generated Image

How safe do we really wish to become?

Surely, yearning for safety from some things

Seems natural, rational and wholesome;

But too loudly and often, alarms ring!

New ideas, new words, provocative art

Dissent, disagreement, otherness weird;

All of these will assail each mind and heart

And none of them ought ever to be feared

Nothing feels safer than smug ignorance

What is more comfortable than routine?

If we always perform the same, stale dance

We will all move like parts of a machine

Comfort and safety and the status quo

Promote mere stasis; don’t we wish to grow?

    When I saw the title, I was very excited to see where you would take this. Loved it! Safety can be dangerous and you do a great job of capturing how it can lead to stagnation and rotting perceptions.

  • Nope, I do not wish to grow, lol. Loved your poem!
