Dam-Cracking

Your Eyes

By Rae SolacePublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read
Runner-Up in the Uncommon Challenge

We share the same rigid spine,

don’t we? The same stiff

upper lip, and eyes

backed with

concrete.

Two carefully crafted dams holding back million-

year-old rivers, ever silently waiting

for the right moment to fail,

to let the catastrophe

come calling.

To allow the impounded

soul-water to burst free, to be struck

dumb, alive and deafening.

You look at me with

this calm recognition that

awakens lost memories

of an old broken

path to the

sea.

You look

past me and

see the reservoir; the

surging, dam-cracking relief

and desire within me.

You must know

that I see it in

you too.

This is lovely. Your language is easy to follow, yet the more I read, the more I notice. I especially enjoyed "You look at me with / this calm recognition that / awakens lost memories / of an old broken / path to the / sea." Your use of line breaks there was masterful.

Crikey. Holding back is at a whole new level here. Fabulous!

You perfectly captured the thick air that resides between two people with so many words unspoken. Beautiful poem, looking forward to more!

Oh! Oh my gosh. I read this out loud and had to applaude. Every word was packed with soul and I felt each one like it was that one drop of water that finally split the concrete apart. Beautifully done! Congratulations on your Runner's Up placement. Take my ❤️ and subscription and go :)
