Comfortable With You
My whole life through
Young little me
Poking your knee,
Holding up my arms,
Asking loudly.
You scoop me up and plop me onto your lap.
Then read a silly story
Bound to make me laugh.
There’s nowhere better than here.

I’m older now and things have changed.
“You” is someone different.
The way you hold me in your arms is different from a parent.
And yet, not so far off.
Nothing is more comfortable than love.
Being close to you, next to you, pressed up against you;
Your warmth and mine,
Gentlest of feelings.
There’s nowhere better than here.

Tides have turned.
I am no longer held;
Now I hold.
So fragile, so small,
You simply exist,
And it’s up to me to scoop you up, to comfort you.
In a moment, I realize I am held again;
One whole tiny hand wrapped around one finger.
And I smile.
There’s nowhere better than here.
