Childhood

Bittersweet memories

Childhood

The silence was golden

And the silence was loud

As the snow told its secrets

To the cold, frozen ground

I thought I saw an iceberg

On the river alone

And I thought the stars were fairies

That chased the cars home

Did the night cast the shadows

Of witches' hands or trees?

And was it the moon I saw

Or a mouth full of teeth?

The air smelled like sugar

That melts on your tongue

When all was still peaceful

And the world was still young

We ran down the train track

Like small human trains

We wore wild flowers

And danced in the rain

But the rain took our past

And it washed it away

Now I long for the past

And those long happy days
