Black Girl Beautiful

because they all must be told

look at you so far past two

and the sun has blessed you so

your face caught my eye ‘cause i did wonder why

sweet baby girl skippin’

gave way to nasty devil n!ƺƺ@s trippin’

as you struggled with a weight

that’s too much for aged eight

as they come yet again to break your beautiful black skin

AS IF

their lust for blood could be sated

would that their teasing and taunting could be hated

ENOUGH

enough for them to stop

PLEASE stop

in the name of any god who will listen

and tell this dark child

her true nature is wild

gold resides in her lips that bedazzles her hips

Photo by Bash Mutumba on Pexels

her head high she should hold

valued treasure untold

fine thing walking is foolishness they talking

'bout the texture of your hair

'bout the clothes that you wear

and your smooth derriere

and your gaze laissez-faire

black girl beautiful

if your skin i could touch

black girl beautiful

ancestor’s grace--you have much

and don’t worry none ‘bout what the neighbors be saying

they bitch and they moan swear your dad’s not your own

and to whom can you cry

against accusations so high

and what does it matter

so long as you’re here

fine thing walking is stupidity they talking

about the way your feet rest and the curves of your breast

and the limits you test because you’re destined for best

had i but known you then

and found out where and seen when

your period came

and nobody to blame

and the depth of your shame for not a soul sang your name

black girl beautiful

a woman to become

a goddess to most and high priestess to some

ebony girl kissing it’s you i’ve been missing

as i look past the lies

and see the innocence of eyes

that are far too graceful for words

it wasn’t your size that the boys did despise

but onyx radiance with such shine

that angels blessed you divine

and not a one could say “mine” for a black star so fine…fine

FINE thing walking is ignorance they talking ‘bout the shape of your thighs

and your sweet sable eyes

your sun had to rise

the bullshit here dies ‘cause they knew

you were wise

black girl beautiful

This is so beautifully written. I live in Australia and grew up with aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander friends... I now have a South Sudanese 'sister'... My own children joke that I must have been disappointed when I saw the colour of their skin when they were born... 'boring white'!

I grew up in Jamaica amongst black people. One never needed to worry then, we all looked the same. There was a sprinkling of white folks, but i never met any until way later, only on the black and white Tv. Life is hard enough without the added worry of racism and people fearing what they don't understand. So sad we are modern yet uncivilized. Love the depth here.
