Beyond the Horizon

free verse

At the border between dawn at day,

along the hazy frontier that separates

my solitude from the clamoring world,

I walk a secret piece of waterfront,

subconsciously considering my fate.

Return to the conflict, or swim into the horizon?

At another time, perhaps a different choice,

but the call of a lone gull has jarred me back to the now.

Today, I will once again climb the tower,

man the ramparts and fight the endless fight

(more from habit than conviction).

As I turn to go, a distant white cap briefly lures me,

but Calypso’s call to uncharted territories must wait.

I am not yet ready to cross the gulf

between

who I am and

who I wish to be.

Randy, I truly love how you choose and format your words into such beautiful writing. I love the emotion behind this one, with the hesitation over deciding whether to take another step forward or not. This is great!

  • Beautiful!
