Smell the banana cream pie

cooking in the oven

your mom had made you some

with lots of loving

and it seemed an idyllic day

that's what some people would say

but you just found out your dad was leaving

your dad was leaving tomorrow

The bananas don't taste the same

and you don't feel like playing

and all the shows on the tv

one by one they bore you

Did the world change and you didn't know it

when you weren't looking?

Did the world change and you didn't know

what they were cooking?

And your 6 year old brain thinks you can reason with them

if you just cry a little you can make them stay together.

but that's not the way the world goes.

you never thought that this would be

the thing that turned on you.

Your momma still holds it together

at least in front of you

but you can hear her sobbing at night

wondering what she's gonna do.

the job she has as an operator

just doesn't pay the bills.

and the rent is due on the apartment you're living in

and well that's not the kind of place you can live now.

And you take it all on yourself

but your little soul just can't help.

you don't even know what's going on

the adults won't let you in.

You take it all upon yourself

but your little soul they can't help.

because the adults won't let you in.
