At First Sight

Dancing butterflies

Love at first sight

I thought was a myth.

Yet, when I first laid eyes on you,

I felt a chemical response.

*

What were those butterflies doing in my stomach,

Cartwheels? The Cha-cha?

Heat rose in my face ... and elsewhere.

I couldn't have looked away if I wanted to.

*

Your expression reflected mine -

Wide eyed, mouth a-gape.

We approached each other,

Closing the distance in tentative anticipation.

*

I saw only you in the crowd, your eyes didn't waver.

With shaky voices, we exchanged names.

I took your hand, feeling an electrical charge

Surge through my body.

*

We danced, uncertain of our relationship,

Knowing it was going somewhere.

Years later, I look at you

With the same wonder.
