Another Flower in the Sun

Ode to the Sunflow

Another Flower in the Sun

Amongst the weeds

and the TALL grass

sits another flower

growing in the sun

s t r e t c h i n g

in the purest rays

of liquid gold

while its roots

dig shallow

trails beneath

the hard-packed soil.

Amongst the weeds

and the TALL grass

another flower greets the dawn

a golden compass

the passage of time

in its arc across the sky

till twilight swoops in

and tucks it's petals in

to await another

rising sun.

Amongst the weeds

and the TALL grass

another flower grows

along the roadside

if today will be the day

it's chosen

plucked from the soil

before it withers

like all the other

flowers in the sun.

Amongst the weeds

and the TALL grass

sits a beautiful flower

embodying the sun

growing high above the rest

to remind us that even

simple and ordinary things

can be beautiful

as it dutifully follows

the sun.

As a Kansan with sunflowers growing outside my door, I dearly love this poem and I'm sharing it with my other Sunflower State friends! You plucked this sunflower and preserved it in poetry for us to enjoy.

Lovely. You have to appreciate the ordinary sunflower. Ordinary to most, not to me. I love the happiness of flowers. They're so special.💙Anneliese
