American Experiment

A reflection on the American Dream inspired by the Jan 2021 attack on the US capitol.

By Jiré SaffronPublished 3 years ago 2 min read

by plane, not by boat

I reached the shores of my American Dream

Forced to desert my mother’s land

I entered the country a refugee

In the last 15 years, I’ve learned a lot about this land

and the promises it makes to people like you and me

Promises

too good to keep

We forget that this country began as an experiment,

less than 300 years in the making

Wars were fought

blood was shed

and this land was built on the backs of the enslaved

Over the past 300 years those hidden scars

continue to make their mark, above the surface

And on January 6

we witnessed the power of the seat

and the significance of those

we elect to serve us publicly

A dark mob descended on the heart of DC

breaking past cops

precedents and barricades

But still allowed to walk home

scot and gunshot free

Misguided militants

swelled the Congress chamber halls

As they invaded,

the fate

of the presidential race

was held up

weapons drawn

a rally and a cry of election fraud

Through the Capitol halls,

they walked

Like they owned the place

One black brother wouldn’t have made it past the front gate

We can’t continue to believe

that these type of things

don’t happen in our country

Or that they are reserved for the third world

America the beautiful

America the beloved

There’s a price that comes with being the leader of the free world

A nation full of opinions on global affairs

but a rare plan of action for your own internal repair

you negotiate peace in the Middle East

you preach a prayer for Paris

you wrote the song

of freedom for Hong Kong

But you violate human rights

in your own plights

Foreign elections have been manipulated

Foreign leaders have been assassinated

Foreign governments have been overthrown

all to maintain the throne

of western democracy

When they say “this is not who we are”

I say this is what the country has always been

America and it’s emperor have spread naked the extent of it’s hypocrisy

Peeking from behind delicate glass and pillars made of ivory

So maybe,

in a change of routine

it’ll be Libya, Venezuela, and Syria who invade Washington

in the name

of restoring democracy

And wake us then

from this American dream
