An Abecedarian poem

Across wide sunlit plains and grassland

Beasts gather in heard, flock and band

Cheetah and antelope, lioness and prey

Deadly chase, but who carries the day?

Elephant's walk, too big to be disturbed

Foals stumble on new legs, lightly perturbed

Gnu and gazelle, as light as a sunbeam

Hippopotomi gambol in river and stream

In shadows, from a distance, scavengers linger

Jackel and Hyena, and their ever-gnawing hunger

Kori Bustards soars low before landing

Largest of birds, it is often found standing

Monkeys leap and play in the high boughs of trees

Nearby, others watch as the primates taunt and tease

Oryx bound through grasses, horns gleaming in the sun

Predators wait, primed to pounce and run

Quiet descends, as the light starts to dim

Red, violet and pink bloom at the sky's rim

Soaring birds settle to rest from flight

Turning day into the night

Under skies, endless and clear

Vast and empty, far and near

Warthogs grunt, as they settle to sleep

Xanthe watches, in scientific observation deep

Yellow flowers close in dark

Zebras rest in the safari park

With Zebra being one of the most common Z words to use in such poems, an abecedarian about Africa only made sense...

You've painted a rich tapestry here. Solid!

  • Romantic notions of safari (non-lethal) in Africa, beautifully detailed. Well done, Natasja.
