One eve in December
The land bedecked with snow
We close our eyes and remember,
*
In the hearth, a dying ember
Continues, dimly, to glow,
For every absent member
*
School starts again in September
In October, spirits aglow
Distracted by words in November,
*
Stars in our eyes, we remember
Times and people from Christmases ago
Memories, more precious than amber
*
Snow starts to fall in November
Next month we a-caroling go
'Tis the Season of Joy in December
*
Love lights our hearts like an ember
Fond memories brighten its glow
Hand clasping hand we remember
Sorrow and Joy all at once in December
This poem is dedicated to my twin, Sally, who died on December 26, 2005
May she live forever in our hearts

This is a beautiful poem. Unfortunately, I don't believe it will qualify for the challenge inasmuch as I'm pretty sure they are expecting villanelles as they are currently defined. While your rhyming fits the scheme, your first line ("One eve in December") should also be your 6th, 12th & 18th lines; & your third line ("We close our eyes and remember,") should be repeated precisely for your 9th, 15th & 19th lines. Even so, it's a lovely poem.
This is beautiful.
All the poems villanelle seems different. This was haunting and lovely. Nostalgic even. You made it a festive memory. Wonderful.
it's a raw and beautiful expression of love and the enduring presence of those we hold dear. Beautiful tribute!❤
A wonderful tribute to Sally.
