A Survivor of His Pain

Thwarted by your cruelty

He suffers acutely from the painful rejection,

Knowing that his sacrifices have been forgotten,

His heart rendering the conclusion that is obsolete,

As he battles to understand the drastic change,

Were the memories a lie all along?

**

Overnight he has been trampled into oblivion,

Discarded in a blink of an eye.

**

Your words don’t portray the result of your actions,

You live the narcissistic life of the privilege,

And it is not how he deserved to be treated.

**

He gave his all for you!

**

Sadly, you’ll now find he has gained his strength,

He has hardened his heart,

And closed your memories tightly inside,

You are soon to discover you’ve been locked and barred,

As he protects what’s left of his sanity.

**

Wisdom has now replaced his sacrificial love for you,

Security the goal of the day.

**

He has learned that he no longer has need of you,

And he has discovered the strength to survive,

Alone — blessed for the years he once had,

Ironclad walls surround his memories,

His love will remain — although withheld to a certain degree,

As he survives your destruction and cruelty.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Makes me think of Rhett Butler's parting words to Scarlett O'Hare in "Gone with the Wind": "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."

  • So happy that his risen from the ashes! Such a powerful poem!
