A Soup Recipe Like No Other

The ingredients are a secret I’ll take to my grave

Dinner — oh dinner is always such a chore

Coming up with something new and creative,

Meals that suit the season, ward off the chill

Or the taste of summer, which is interpretative.

***

So tonight I’m going to make a little surprise

One that’ll see my patrons leave with a smile,

It’ll be a soup, not one you’ve ever tasted before

Or so I hope, as this will be a new extensive trial.

***

Soup — perfect for the cold winter evening

As I gather together the necessary ingredients,

A lot of a particular liquid for the base line

And choice of cuts for my recipes expedience.

***

I apologise but for this recipe and all it holds

Will be my secret and one I’ll never tell all,

As I chop a little of this and a little of that

Toss in a smidge of spices, I’ll not tell or recall.

***

My pot is on the stove as it softly simmers

Bringing a sweet smelling essence to my house,

If you’re clever you’ll make an educated guess

From the sweet smells in which you’re doused.

***

I steal a little taste to ensure it needs no more

And a giggle slips from my lips as I savour,

A soup that tastes like no other you’ve sipped

As it is it’s own perfectly balanced flavour.

***

Sit, sit my dear guests, the time is now near

I promise after this meal you’ll be truly blessed,

I watch you lift spoon to mouth, your eyes wide

When you realise, my soup tastes of happiness.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
