A Pulse in the Dark

Just another summer night...

the hums of firefly wings buzzing by,

a whisper of slight laughter ringing through,

the cadence of your voice like a soft sigh—

these were the bright nothings that seemed taboo.

*

fireworks bursting overhead in bright sparks,

your fingers brushing near mine on the grass,

the way your words trailed and left tender marks—

my heart felt fragile as newly spun glass.

*

your parents said to take the shortcut home,

yet we lingered spare moments in shadow

because we often had small room to roam

and we had only minutes to borrow.

*

the walk back seemed so short, like stolen time,

all the more for our hands entwined—sublime.
