Summer Vacation with the Loner Crowd

We thought we had all the answers.

we trip and fall down spider webs of doubt

because we are still new to liquid fire

of the how and why of the "ourselves" route—

what you and me can hope to aspire.

*

we were the fast friends of crowded lunch rooms,

thick with heat from talk and rumor alike,

but we had no care for the gossip trails

falling swift from our peers' mouths like smoke plumes.

*

to be left in our own worlds seemed like bliss

when we did not know any better then

of so many threads and strands we could miss—

all those stray stories we could later pen.

*

youth is only cherished when you look back;

that summer we might have had a fair knack.
