Perception of Love

Being in a relationship is like being in a one-of-a-kind club,

An experience created,

To feel a whole new level of love.

For all those couples you always admired,

You now belong,

Because you too are desired.

You too found someone to be on your arm,

How you will be no longer be alone,

And you have someone else to affirm,

How you belong.

As if you are perceived as someone better,

And when you feel loved,

You finally understand what's in that hidden treasure.

It's not only about the love you share,

Though that matters too,

But how you found somebody who cares,

As you make your relationship debut.

The feeling of being wanted is untouchable,

But being able to show others this,

No matter how dysfunctional,

Is what keeps love in business.

We crave the admiration from others,

That because we found our person,

We don't belong to the single numbers,

And how we will never die a virgin.

It's not even about being shallow,

As it is about fear,

About not living in a happy couple's shadow,

We just all want someone to notice if we’d disappear.

Perception isn't everything,

But there is a driving force,

For someone to love us enough to share a ring and maybe even create offspring,

Even if at one point it ends in divorce.

We want what others have,

And we want others to see we have it,

Whether to talk about ourselves or brag,

Even if some of it is counterfeit.

It can be a dangerous game to play,

Because when you're in love,

It's easy,

But when time between you two get tough,

You feel a perception of shame.

That you don't want to tarnish the image you built,

And show others the struggles you face,

Even if its normal and part of being an adult,

You’d rather act like nothing out of place.

As if when the relationship ends,

So does all those eyes,

Of wanting the love, you had with your boyfriend,

As if we were worth being televised.

You now have to erase the image in your head,

On how you were perfect for each other,

Then explain to the widespread,

Of telling people why you are no longer together.

Getting over that perception,

Of whom you were together,

Will be even harder dealing with your own rejection.

Even if it is for the better.

Overall, the only eyes that truly matter,

Don't come from others,

But the perception of yourself,

On how you are tougher without a lover,

Above everything else!
