A nonbinary love story,

On a soft, sunny day.

When I look into their eyes, I swear I see the colours of their soul.

A vibrant red, for their passion, but also their struggles, the demons they’ve faced.

The demons never stopped them, but they sure came close. I trace my finger along their arm, remembering their story.

Lavender, for the softest parts of them. The way their hair falls right when they wake up, the way they scrunch their nose when pushing their glasses up, and every “I love you” that’s ever left their lips.

That colour reminds me of the proud lavender bush outside my mother’s childhood home. I ponder this for a moment, reminiscing about the days gone by.

A deep blue, almost black, for the aching sadness inside of them. There is beauty in this too. They too, ache for days gone by. We are the same that way.

We are the same in many ways, but so, so different. I am not as soft as they are. I am deep, angry colours. Colours that bleed together, make a mess.

Somehow, I don’t think this is what they see in me.
