A False Declaration

A living lie

She waited patiently for your return,

Not knowing there was little chance,

You’d made up your mind, did what was best for you,

The last thing on your mind was an old romance.

***

You saunter through your day nursing your ego,

Not a thought given to the love you left behind,

She pines as she silently longs to see your face,

But you’ve no sympathy for her pain of any kind.

***

She believed your spoken promises,

You convinced her with your repeated dribble,

She felt your love, your care, your lies,

Silent throughout your anger, she never quibble.

***

Her heart beat in hope and dreams,

Seeing you for someone you could never be,

Your true colours began to shine,

But as they say, love is too blind to see.

***

She mourns your absence,

Do you think of her as you go about your day,

Imagining the devastation she is currently surviving,

As she learns of the cruelty in which you play?

***

She sobs herself to sleep in the darkening hours,

Blaming herself for the fault of her aching heart,

Struggling through the hours of your betrayal,

Not understanding your need to part.

***

Once conquered you move onto the next,

The hunt is the prize you desire,

The captured heart tossed aside,

Another notch on your belt for you to acquire.

***

She’ll eventually count her blessing,

As she realises she actually had a lucky escape,

Your love was not healthy, no it’s extremely toxic,

A war zone, a destructive landscape.

***

Her heart may be scarred from the sheer battle,

Fought alone as she traversed your battleground,

But the lessons she gained through the pain,

Freed her for the abundant self love she found.

***

She has now become terribly guarded,

Protective of her sacred heart,

Love has left her weary,

Teaching her to be a little more smart.

***

She’ll not give up on love,

As you’ve taught her well the destruction

Of a false declaration, an ego’s promise,

Not of love but instead a conquered seduction.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Another beautifully written piece. Well done, my friend.

  • Omg, this felt like it was written for me! This is exactlyyyyyyy what I'm going through. I feel like I'm dead but your poem made me realise that one day I will be back on my feet!

  • Ah, but it is often so hard to tell the difference, especially when we allow our heart to get swept away, no matter whether the sweeping has been swift & easy or lengthy & painstaking. Yet to guard our heart so dearly as to close it off entirely is to allow ourselves to feel nothing but bitterness, cold & hard. So tentatively, but lightly testing the waters, ever so cautious, the heart begins to open, & in the light of love true, blossoms gloriously.
