How to Not Take the Perfect Photograph
Photography is oversaturated with perfection. How much money is spent chasing pixels, poured endlessly into new and better lenses? How many hours are spent chasing that single shot, those laborious hours poured into the night, all those lights and diffusions set up for the dream of a perfect picture? The industry is bombarded with the unattainable, self-destructive ideal of perfection—cast your sight across the ceaseless hordes of online photoshop tutorials and you will find nothing but technical instruction, soulless in nature and robotic in their repetition. Where is that final layer? How long must you edit, before the ideal image emerges from the chaff, sloughing off the imperfect versions of its former selves? You could chase that fantasy into the edges of twilight and never find more than a single whisper of it.

"My Darkroom Is Filled With Light"
Excitement stirred in my chest as I opened up an old dusty box to reveal a camera of old. The more I looked around me the more I found. Dusty hardcover books were grouped with torn softcover books among fabrics that didn't seem to belong together. The sunlight seems to reveal a decay that had begun long ago from heat and time among other things. Mixed in among the weathered old photographs, the single baby shoe, disintegrating newspaper articles, and dilapidated dolls there they were. It was like opening a treasure chest. Only these treasures were better because they belonged to my ancestors. I could not find the significance of some of those treasures, but I recognized the value in others. Another one of the treasures I recognized among the items was a brilliant baby blue typewriter.

The Magic of the Collage
Taking photos is something I’ve come to do in my everyday life. The camera is a part of me and the photos are an extension of my thoughts and ideas. The use of collage however is ultimately what has led to some of my most compelling images. My individual shots often feel incomplete, being part of a bigger whole, something I can bring out in a collage. Whether it’s all from the same roll of film or an intentional project, I’ve created several collages in the last two years which have become some of my favourite projects to date. I’ll go through some of my favourite examples, describing the process and how I bring these ideas to life through editing.

I AM
In 2019, I wrote, produced, co-directed, shot some pictures and displayed my first photo-art album at two art exhibitions; one that I organized and another that I got to be a part of with other black artists. The photo album entitled "I AM" explored mental health journey stories. The idea of this project was to create awareness on mental health and also to share my mental health journey through photography. I can not show the processes of some of the images without giving you a background information on the why of the project. One of the things that I was so sure of this project was that in every process whether it being writing this project, or directing or capturing or editing I wanted to include a piece of myself in it. I let myself just be whatever it needed to be to make this happen.

I Learned to Take Photos of Tiny Things by Doing Sports Photography
I love to take photos of bees. I work to support them with flowers specifically planted to attract bees into and around my yard. Last year, I documented 7 different species of bees on my Echinacea flowers (aka cone flowers) in 1 afternoon alone. The medium-sized bee in my photo above is not enlarged as I simply took the shot a few inches above the feasting bee. These nerves of steel I gained from sports photography. More on my sports-photography venture in a moment, as I'm on flight with my bees.
