The Chihuahua And The Broken Heart
I swallowed hard as I snapped the red ESA vest on my little dog Paco. He was my youngest son’s birthday present eight years prior, but he quickly and unexpectedly attached to me. Shortly after he came home to us, he and I became inseparable. Today he was all I felt I had in the world. The backpack was pulling on my shoulders, and I gripped little Paco in my arms, praying somehow to get through this. My heart sank as I watched my husband of twenty-seven years disappearing from my view in the window of the airport tram. I stared until I could no longer see a glimpse of him and continued to stare as if his ghost would somehow reappear and tell me not to go. However, that is not how my story would end.
Teddi's Walkabout
Teddi’s Walkabout I’m a psychologist with a busy practice. On Monday, June 3, 2019, I was in my office between appointments when I saw I had missed several calls from my oldest son, Alexander. I called and he was in a panic. He had taken his brother’s dog, Teddi, down from Flagstaff to Oak Creek Canyon for the afternoon, she had been off-leash and disappeared. I cancelled the rest of my appointments and raced 30 miles south to find this beloved dog. My other son, Christopher raced down as well. So, there I was, in a dress and sandals, hiking up and down the creek, climbing over guard rails, hollering her name and shouting questions at fisher-people and sun bathers.
A rescue's "unexpected" journey
The index card at the shelter may not read "BUDDY" but as I looked at the picture over the Internet I saw Buddy. Oh, this dog wasn't exactly like him. But the stature, the beautiful tail, the face and, most of all, the LOOK of fear on the face was exactly what I saw when I selected Buddy to rescue! And, there's no heart on the forehead like my sweet boy but there's the beautiful Buddy look that I see day in and day out. The look that melts my heart each and every time that I see it.

Otto von Schultz started out to be my least favorite dog. At the time of our acquaintance, I owned three very large dogs, Draconis, Wilhelmina, and Stirfry. Draconis was a Rhodesian ridge back/golden retriever mix. Wilhelmina was a shepherd /pit-bull mix. Stirfry was so mixed that only God or a genetic testing facility would be able to sort him out.

To my readers... although this is a fictional story, it is based on a real life dog named Sunshine. Sunshine was my first ever pet from when I was much younger, and is still my favorite to this day. He was acquired from a co-worker of my mom's... who found him and brought him in after his previous "owner" had abused and then subsequently abandoned him.
