Pictures of Cats In 'Nam and a Playlist To Enjoy Them With
I am going to enter this in the Halo Collar and Vocal Challenge “Life Unleashed” because let's face it Cats are the most unleashed of our two main domestic pets. They are not dogs because they only tolerate humans until they develop opposable thumbs. I know this will be rejected from the challenge but I will enter anyway.
I am not a cat person, I am not a pet person as I don’t feel I can give them the attention that they need and deserve but that doesn't mean that I am not a fan of animals and cats seem to be ve the most independent of pets , and I meet many on my morning walks. To this end I wrote about the cats I met in my piece “Cats In ‘Nam” and then thought I would maybe do a playlist that was cat or at least feline based. While I will try and keep it mainly domestic and feral feline based there may be the odd lion , tiger or cougar that slips in there , and maybe there will be more than a few of them , so here we go.
The YouTube Playlist is here if you want to hear them all
I’ll post a Cats In ‘Nam over each song.
The Aristocats - Everybody Wants To Be A Cat
The Aristocats is a wonderful film with great songs and this seemed like a perfect opener for my playlist.
The Cure - Love Cats
While The Cure can be dark and threatening , this is an actual slice of definite Gothic fun from Robert Smith and company.
Pink Floyd - Lucifer Sam
A Syd Barret penned eulogy to a siamese cat , the video on the playlist is rather excellent.
Jah Wobble - Tiger Tiger (or "Tyger , Tyger")
Jah Wobble’s reading of the amazing William Blake poem . This is the first of three departures from domestic felines. William Blake was responsible for some amazing songs and poetry. Below is the opening verse, you have to agree with me on this one.
“Tiger! Tiger! burning bright
In the forest of the night
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?”
T Rex - Cat Black The Wizard's Hat
Marc Bolan in a mystical acoustic dreamland . A favourite of mine when I heard it on a Best of T. Rex album , one of the first albums that I bought.
Brian Eno - The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Domestic Cat Departure Number Two, Brian always manages to surprise and this is no exception. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", also known as "Wimoweh" and originally as "Mbube" is a song recorded by Solomon Linda and his group The Evening Birds for the South African Gallo Record Company in 1939.
It was covered internationally by many 1950s pop and folk revival artists, including The Weavers, Jimmy Dorsey, Yma Sumac, Miriam Makeba, and The Kingston Trio.
In 1961, it became a number one hit in the U.S. as adapted by the doo-wop group The Tokens.
In the mid-nineties, it became a pop "supernova" when licensed to Walt Disney for use in the film The Lion King, its spin-off TV series and live musical, prompting a lawsuit on behalf of the impoverished descendants of Solomon Linda
Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut
Just a sassy almost eponymous rockabilly theme tune and mission statement from the band.
Lulu - I’m A Tiger
Domestic Cat Departure Number Three , I always loved this record , great fun and from before most of you were even thought of.
The Kinks - Phenomenal Cat
From the iconic “Village Green Preservation Society” album , this is a sweet and beautiful tale of a phenomenal Cat (well aren’t all our cats phenomenal?)
Al Stewart - Year of The Cat
Well not about an actual cat , but a song that gave Al Stewart some long deserved success and the album sleeve is awash with feline trivia.
I hope you have listened to the playlist. I know I could have added a lot more, but we have lives to lead although you can hopefully loop it and enjoy it , I certainly can.
