Why Personal Growth Is Never A Waste Of Time

As you grow more, your maturity and confidence increase

By Thea EnglishPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

We get discouraged when personal growth isn't happening as fast as we would like. We only see our failures and setbacks, and it is hard to reflect on the progress we've made so far. Maybe there are naysayers in your life who know about your rocky past and they're telling you that you'll never change your life. The truth is that personal growth is more like a marathon rather than a sprint. It will take time and patience, but in the end those efforts you made will be worth it. Here is why personal growth is never a waste of time.

Your Relationships Will Improve

When you achieve personal growth, it will improve your relationships. If you have a history of resorting to anger and defensiveness every time you receive constructive criticism, you may seek counseling to get to the root of why this is the case. Then you use your counselor's suggestions and over time, others see the changes in you.

You Have Better Emotional Regulation

Another benefit of personal growth is that you have better emotional regulation. A huge part of emotional maturity is the ability to manage your emotions properly. You will be able to stick to long-term goals better and not get easily frustrated when life doesn't go the way you want it.

Future Generations Will Benefit From It

If you're a parent, you need consistent personal growth because your children and future generations will benefit from it. If you grew up in a home where physical and verbal abuse was common, you can be a different parent for your children. Personal growth and sometimes therapy can help you do this, and you will change your family dynamics for years to come.

You Open Up Yourself To New Opportunities

Another reason why personal growth isn't a waste of time is that it opens you up to new opportunities. Perhaps you underwent a journey where you returned to school in order to learn new skills so that you can enter a new career. You found mentors in your new industry and you learned a lot from them. Now you're at a new job and you're more fulfilled than in previous years.

A Better Financial Future

Another aspect of personal growth is that your finances will improve. Some ways to achieve personal growth with your finances include:

Getting out of debt

Learning better spending habits

Establishing an emergency fund with a few months' of expenses

Investing wisely

Doing estate planning and leaving a financial legacy for your children

You Develop More Self-Discipline

With consistent personal growth, you become more self-disciplined in life. You're no longer making excuses or blaming others for not succeeding. You're holding yourself to higher standards and you're determined to overcome all odds in order to achieve your goals.

You Can Influence Others With Your Life

Personal growth is not just about your own success. One of the main purposes of personal growth is to influence others to improve their lives too. If you overcame a longtime speech impediment with speech therapy and now you're a successful radio personality, you might write a book about your experiences in the hopes of inspiring others who are where you were years ago.

Adversity Doesn't Cause You To Give Up

Personal growth is vital because it helps you stay the course when adversity tempts you to give up on your goals. You'll realize that adversity is just a classroom where you learn how to mature and apply the wisdom you gained from going through hard times.

So the next time it seems that personal growth is really slow, understand that the results will come in time. It doesn't matter if it comes three months or three years from now. Most importantly, you'll appreciate the success more because of the hard work you put in to get to that point in your life.
