Self-Discipline Is Achieved With Small And Consistent Habits

It's not always the grandiose changes that improve self-discipline

We often think that self-discipline is achieved with big and drastic changes to our habits but this is not usually the case. Self-discipline is generally achieved through small and consistent daily habits. When you start out with small positive changes, you'll slowly see change occur in your life. I'm a proponent of slow growth when pursuing any goal that I have. I find that when I take a lot of shortcuts and find the most convenient routes, I miss out on growth and maturity. Here are some small habits that will help you build self-discipline.

Put Away Your Distractions Daily

Distractions abound and if you're not careful, they will eat up your self-discipline over time. One small habit you can cultivate is putting away your distractions before you begin your important work for the day. This might mean you'll need to log out all of your favorite social media sites for a few hours. It could also mean silencing your phone and not accepting non-important phone calls.

Have A Daily Routine In Place

When you have a consistent routine, you set yourself up for improved self-discipline. Write down a list of tasks that you must do every day and the times at which you must complete them. You can set timers throughout your day to help you stay on track if you're prone to distractions.

Don't Start With The Easiest Tasks First

A part of self-discipline is to push through the hard things in life consistently in order to achieve certain goals. You can do this by tackling the hardest tasks at the beginning of your day, then proceed to tasks that are less challenging.

Add Some Order To Your Tasks

If it seems that every task is important, add order by categorizing them according to importance. Start by doing your most urgent tasks and then do the ones that are important yet not urgent. Finally, you can complete tasks that are neither urgent or important but beneficial for accomplishing your goals for the day.

Get Accustomed To Discomfort

Sometimes, you'll need to embrace discomfort in order to discipline yourself consistently. You may not like the idea of working out early in the morning because you prefer to sleep longer. But if you get used to this new habit, you'll learn to enjoy your new workout routine.

Work During Your Most Productive Times

It also helps to work during your most productive times of the day so that you will get more done and develop better self-discipline. If you're the least distracted during the morning hours, then this is the time you should block out to get things done.

Listen To Media That Inspires You

This is another cool small habit that will motivate you to remain self-disciplined on your journey towards personal growth and success. Listen to podcasts that help you gain a new perspective on issues that you're dealing with. Write down any books or online courses that the podcaster recommends if you think you'll benefit from them.

Consider Why You're Disciplining Yourself

When you think about the end goals you have, this can serve as motivation to discipline yourself daily. Maybe you desire to relocate to a different city and you want a home in a safer neighborhood. This means that you're saving money regularly and you're working to improve your credit.

Let Others In On The Journey

In some cases, it's a good idea to invite relatives and friends to your journey and hold you accountable for staying the course. They can encourage you and assist you when you get off track.

Self-discipline is a lifelong skill that is instrumental in maturing as an individual and it affects your relationships with others as well as your finances, your career, and health.
