What I Learned from a Week of Saying Yes to Everything
One week, countless yeses, and a surprising journey outside my comfort zone that changed how I see life

A week ago, I made a decision that I thought would either lead to personal growth or complete chaos: for seven days straight, I would say yes to everything (within reason, of course). Inspired by a mix of a Jim Carrey movie and a creeping realization that I’d been living on autopilot, I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and shake up the routine I’d been stuck in for months.
Let me say this: it was harder—and more rewarding—than I expected.
Day 1: The Power of "Yes" Starts Small
On Monday morning, I told a coworker I was doing the challenge. She grinned and immediately said, “Want to join us for karaoke after work?”
Normally, my response would be a polite excuse followed by an evening curled up with Netflix. But this time, I said yes.
That night, standing under neon lights, screaming Taylor Swift lyrics off-key with coworkers I barely knew, I felt something I hadn’t in a while: free. Saying yes, just once, had cracked open the door to connection.
Day 2–3: Awkward, Exhausting, and Kind of Amazing
Tuesday brought a barrage of yes-worthy moments: a last-minute lunch invitation, helping a friend move, trying pineapple on pizza (still not a fan). Saying yes meant my schedule was no longer my own—but that’s kind of the point. I was learning to let go of control.
By Wednesday, the exhaustion hit. I said yes to a 6 a.m. yoga class (I am not a morning person) and yes to presenting at a team meeting I hadn’t prepared for. My brain was screaming “no,” but I powered through. And strangely enough, I didn’t crash and burn—I actually thrived. That presentation? It went better than expected.
Day 4: The “Yes” That Scared Me Most
Thursday tested me. A friend asked if I wanted to come to an open mic night and read something I’d written. Public speaking and vulnerability? That’s a cocktail of my biggest fears.
But I’d made a commitment. So I dusted off a short poem I never thought I’d share and stood under a spotlight with trembling hands. My voice wavered, but I did it. And after, a stranger came up and said my words had moved her.
That moment—pure and real—was worth every second of discomfort.
Day 5–6: Realizations Sneak In
By Friday, I wasn’t just saying yes to events—I was saying yes to myself. Yes to being seen. Yes to being imperfect. Yes to spontaneous decisions like going on a last-minute road trip with a college friend I hadn’t seen in years.
Saturday was weirdly quiet. No major asks. So I asked myself: “What do I want to say yes to today?” I ended up hiking a trail I’d always ignored, unplugged from my phone, and sat with my own thoughts. It was peaceful. And surprisingly emotional.
Day 7: A Different Kind of Yes
Sunday came, and with it a request from my younger sibling: “Will you just hang out with me today? No phones, no plans. Just us.” I said yes, of course.
That afternoon, playing video games and eating junk food, I realized something. Saying yes wasn’t about constant adventure or always being busy. It was about being open—to experiences, to people, to life. Sometimes, the most meaningful “yes” is the one that means “I’m here, fully, with you.”
So, What Did I Learn?
Saying yes creates opportunity—but more importantly, it creates connection.
Fear is often just a sign you’re about to grow.
You can’t say yes to everything forever—but saying yes more often than no might change your life in small, powerful ways.
This challenge reminded me that life doesn’t happen when you’re playing it safe. It happens in the messy, unplanned, sometimes uncomfortable spaces you step into when you simply say: yes.
